Double Whiffle Tree, Circa 1910

Description

Object
Description
This is a double wooden whiffletree that consists of three separate wood and pieces attached together by straight forged iron pieces that moved horizontally to allow for turns when using two animals.
Notes
Whiffletrees are used to distribute the force from a point load to the chains or straps on each side of the harness. The center of the bar is connected to the load and the ends to the harness.

These are usually used when pulling plows, or wagons. A double whiffletree (also called a Whippletree) would be used when two animals were harnessed together to pull a wagon or a carriage.
