In 1900 the businesses in existence along the west side of Main street between Dobie Street and Algoma Street were; Albert Roach's Restaurant and Billard Room and The Thessalon House on the corner of Main Street and Algoma West. Charles Donaldson Livery stable located just out of sight.
The Thessalon House was the Village's first hotel on the corner of Main and Algoma Streets, built circa 1882 for the Dyment Lumber Company.
The south west corner of Algoma and Huron is the current site of the IOOF Hall which was constructed in 1936 and was officially opened with a dance on the July 1st weekend, even though their building was not totally completed at that time. It has recently been re-roofed and appears ready to stand for another 50 years.
This photo shows the site of Bird's Electric next to the Arena. Mr. Bird ran his business here from approximately 1952 to 1978.
Prior to Bird's Electric the lot originally was owned by Nathaniel Dyment who sold it to George Stewart in 1908. Mr. Stewart and later Mr. Wiggs both ran livery stables in this location.
After Bird's Electric in approximately 1975 the north part of the lot was purchased by Gerald King who ran a confectionary called "Poor Jerry's". It changed owners several times after that and was owned by Robert Darling, Terry Hoyle, Mike Maron, Jean Borland & Carol Mercer, and Ian & Verna Simon.
This chart shows the location and changes in the businesses located along this block.
