Notes
Initially with the Royal Air Force, Kelley later transferred to the Medical Corps and worked overseas as an x-ray equipment operator until the end of World War I. Notes accompanying photographs of James Byron Kelley contributed by his brother, Roy Kelley, are as follows: "James Byron Kelley joined the Royal Flying Corps in World War I and when it was ascertained he could not even see to drive a car he was discharged. (He knew the early eye chart by heart.) He immediately joined up with the Engineers who transferred him to the Medical Corp. He went overseas and during his time at the Hospital (Lady Astor's Estate)[in England] he operated the then very basic X-ray equipment. He was discharged after the end of the first War." James Bryon Kelley is shown here in the uniform of the Royal Flying Corps. The Oakville Star & Independent announced his return to Oakville on Wednesday, September 17th, 1919 with the following front-page article: "Welcome Home. Once more we use the familiar heading "Welcome Home" to welcome two more of our soldier boys from overseas. This time it is a double welcome in both cases, J. Byron Kelley and Harold Wilson each having returned with a pretty English bride. They came on the Str. Cedric and arrived in town on Monday."
