- This image shows the cement plant after the 1977 expansion. Construction on the original facility began in 1911 and proved challenging as hydro power had to be pulled from Niagara. It also required an increased need for rail services. Even before construction work began, there had been talks with the municipality about the conditions of the plant's operation. It was during this time that John Grieve Lind moved to the area with his family in order to both represent his company and become part of the community he would work in.
After the offical opening of the plant in November of 1912, it quickly became an important part of the community as it brought economic growth. The Lind family continued to run the plant successfully through two World Wars and the Great Depression. In the post-war years, there was expansion to other locations nearby and in 1977 the new modernized plant was built, as visible in the photo.
Following the hard war years and the increased pressures of the growing business, the Lind family decided to step away from the company and they sold the St. Marys Cement Company to Blue Circle in 1997. Even under new ownership, the legacy of the Lind Family is recognized through donations to the community. The St. Marys Cement Company is still active today and many of the employees are second or third generation workers for the plant. - Notes
