- Description
- The lot this house is located on was owned by several individuals until a house was built on the property. According to the 1877 assessment rolls, it was not until James McIntyre owned the property that a two-storey frame house was built. The house is a common style, wooden frame with horizontal siding and a small veranda. Since 1975, the house has been renovated several times. In recent years, the original wooden boards have been replaced on the house, as well as shutters added to the exterior.
James McIntyre moved from Fullarton in 1864 to St. Marys, where he opened a store. He moved to Toronto only a few years later and he rented out the property. In 1882 the house was sold to John McLean, a local druggist and prominent St. Marys resident, who also rented out the property to tenants. Following the death of John McLean, his son Frank McLean took ownership of the home. The house was rented out until it was sold in 1916 to Robert Elliott, a local carpenter and builder who was best known for building the Gregory Block on the South side of Queen Street. Several other families and individuals owned the house after it was sold again in 1918, including the Sandercott family.
