Description
This stone house was built for John Henry Clark, a retired farmer originating from the Rannoch area. In the 1870s, Clark built a house on the lot located at 108 Robinson Street. The structure seen in the photo was built behind that house, and originally used as a carriage-house with an attached stable. From Ontario Street, the building appears to be one-storey; however the second storey can be seen at the back from Robinson Street.

The Ruthig family came to own the house in the 1920s, and the property was used as a cider mill. Eventually ownership passed to the Rice family, with Colonel Lincoln Rice and his wife Catherine converting the stable into a garage and using the carriage house for storage. It was not until 1946 that the structure was used for residential purposes. The Rice family had the property turned into an apartment for their son.

During the first three seasons of the Stratford festival from 1953 to 1955, several actors were tenants on this property, including Lorne Green, Jason Robards Jr. and Eric House. Theater director John Hirsch also leased the house for a year.
