- Description
- This two and a half storey, yellow brick house was built in 1883 for James Carter. James Carter was the son of notable St. Marys resident and mill owner George Carter. The two men were also business partners, with James Carter taking over as president of his father’s company after his passing.
The house exterior is adorned with white decorative brickwork, with red painted brick working as an inlaid design. The property is enclosed with a cast iron fence that is still in place today. The property also features a bay window on the right side of the house and an ornate gabled roof. The architect of the house was William Williams, who was responsible for the design of several houses in St. Marys. A front verandah restoration project took place in 2012, transforming the exterior of the house back to its original façade, with the veranda wrapping around the west and south sides of the house. This house is a historically designated structure.
After the death of her husband in 1905, Mary Carter, wife of James Carter, lived in the residence until 1934. In the late 1930s tenants included bank manager J.B. Clarkson and his family. In 1945, ownership changed. Keith and Victoria Clysdale lived in the house with their four children and were very involved in the community, Keith working as a lawyer and Victoria as a teacher. Two others families have resided in this home after the Clysdales.
