Description
This farmhouse was built in the early 1870s. The original builder of the house is unknown. However, one of the earliest owners of the house, perhaps even the first, was David A. Robertson. Robertson was a farmer and owner of the National Hotel in St. Marys, once located on the southeast corner of Queen and Water Streets. He was very involved in the local community; Robertson was town Reeve from 1858 to 1860, the 10th Mayor of St. Marys in 1878 to 1879, and he sat on the building committee for the First Presbyterian Church. Robertson lived in the house located at 465 Widder Street East with his wife and nine children.

The stonework of this house adds distinction to the façade, as it was laid in an alternating pattern of fieldstone and quarry stone. The house displays the builder’s attention to detail with the decorative elements on the veranda overhang, the central dormer with the double round-headed windows, arched stone detailing above the windows and the ornamental bargeboard under the roof peak. The home is an example of the Gothic-Revival architectural style popular throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries.
