- Description
- A photo taken by Milton Reesor showing the stone extraction operations at the Horseshoe Quarry in 1903. The stone was first removed from the quarry floor and placed on cars which were hoisted up with a winch to the surface. The structure for the operation of the ramp is visible in the centre of the photo. The rail cars seen on the far right of the image took the quarried stone away for use.
The Horseshoe Quarry predated the cement company in St. Marys. The quarry provided stone for cement making before the company began to quarry its own stone. The quarry was located at the far south end of Church Street and was close enough to the rail line that the Grand Trunk ran a short spur to the quarry to load stone. - Notes
