- Description
- This photo features the water tower once located at the Grand Trunk Railway's Junction Station on Glass Street in St. Marys. The tower supplied water for the servicing of the locomotive steam engines stopping at the facility. The water tank stood atop a wooden substructure. Metal bands encased the tank to prevent rupture.
Note the metal pole visible rising from the top of the tank's roof; this pole acted as a water-level indicator. The bottom end of the pole was attached to a float device inside the tank. The indicator rod would rise and fall with the fluctuating water level.
Ice has accumulated on the exterior of the water tower. Many water towers, located in Northern Ontario and the prairie provinces, were subjected to harsh winters and were therefore heated to prevent this type of freezing. However, this tank was clearly not heated and only frequent usage would have prevented ice build-up.
This image was captured by Milton Reesor, a local photography enthusiast. The water tank would be replaced with another structure several years after this photo was taken. Eventually, the water tower would be demolished at this site due to the discontinued use of steam locomotives in 1959. - Notes
