- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. The photo features a large brick home located in the countryside, the address of this home is unknown at this time. It appears to have been a very grand home with ornate ginger breading at the roof peak and a large wraparound verandah and balcony. The front entry is enclosed and vines are growing across the verandah up to the second storey, adding privacy to the porch. The house features a substantial "tower" in the Queen Anne style. A smaller side porch is visible behind the "tower" along with a frame addition at the back, possibly the summer kitchen. The property appears to be well kept with a tidy walkway leading up to the entrance and a woven wire fence enclosing the back of the property, a modern style of fence at the time.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 929. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County. - Notes
- Condition: Good - Image is very clear. Glass is chipped at top left corner and bottom right corner. Light scratching across surface, deepest scratch at bottom right corner (2.5cm). Damage to negative along right edge, 1.3cm at widest point. Similar damage at top left corner 0.8cm at widest point. Unknown residue stuck to bottom left corner 2.5cm x 11.5cm.
