- Description
- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. This photo features a large barn in the countryside. Two horses are standing in the barnyard and are hitched to a wagon. The wagon appears to have people sitting in it as the top of a hat is visible in the photograph. However, the image is damage and the people are largely obscured. What appears to be a hand operated water pump is visible on the left side of the barn close to the large double doors.
This style of barn was known as a bank barn. It was a rectangular structure with two levels built into a bank or sloped ground. The lower level was used to house animals such as horses and cattle. The upper level had a ramp, seen here, that allowed the hay wagons to access that level. The second level was normally hay storage and a threshing floor. The livestock on the ground floor were protected during the winter due to the insulating hay above them.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 931. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County. - Notes

Second large emulsion damage/flaw near right edge. Distorts the image, 3.5cm x 3cm.
