- Description
- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. It shows a rural family posing in front of two wooden frame houses. Two older women are seated for the photograph, two young women and two young men are standing behind them. One man is holding a straw hat in his hand, the other is crouched next to a dog. A wire fence encloses the property behind them.
The smaller home to the left has thick vines growing across its façade. The larger home has a decorative carved pediment over the doorway. The wooden door to the cellar can be seen to the left of the front door, close to the ground. A wooden rain barrel stands at the corner of the house. There appears to be an orchard at the right side of the property.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 942. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County. - Notes
- Condition: Very Good - Image is very clear. Tiny chip out of bottom left corner of glass plate. Light scratches along left side of negative. Slight brown discolouration at upper left corner.
