- Description
- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. The photo features a rural family posing in front of their wood frame house. The family appears to include a man and woman, likely the parents of the children, and four young boys. The family is wearing their good clothes, the man and boys dressed in their jackets and bowties. The woman is seated in a rocking chair on the grass. She is holding a circular cockade fade in her lap. The little boy standing to the right of the woman is dressed in a nautically themed suit, with a deep sailor collar and anchor motif on the chest. Nautical clothing was common in this period.
The house is a storey and a half. It features an arched window in the central dormer and a simple front door with pediment detailing above the transom window. The house has a ledge above the foundation that will support brick in the future. Potted plants sit on the sills inside the windows and along the exterior ledge near the doorway. An oil lamp can be seen through the lace curtains in the left window.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 968. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County.
