- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. Three people are posing in front of an old house in the countryside. An older man is sitting in a chair outside of the doorway and an older woman is standing behind him. The woman is wearing glasses and has a plaid bow tied at her neck. A younger man wearing a hat is sitting to the right with a dog lying at his feet.
A log house is standing behind them; it displays several examples of construction styles. The house appears to have been constructed with hand hewn logs. The exterior has been partially boarded over with vertical wood siding. A large window is located beside the open front door. A board and batten lean-to wing has been added to the side of the house. A long stove pipe is visible on the roof to the right. The roof is covered in crude wood planks; the decking underneath is exposed on the far right side of the roof.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 991. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County. - Notes
- Condition: Very Good - Image is very clear. Little to no damage to glass plate. Slight oxidation along left edge (width: 1cm). Small amount of emulsion loss at top of negative, three small spots (<1cm). Some emulsion damage along right edge (1cm at widest point). Moderate damage to negative in upper left quadrant (width: 1.3cm, length: 2.3cm).
