Description
This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. The photo shows a large barn with a windmill and silo. A wooden fence encloses part of the barnyard. Stall doors can be seen leading out into the yard from the lower level. The large barn doors are open, giving a view into the upper level which would have been used for hay storage and threshing. The animals in the lower level would have been kept warm in the winter due to the insulating hay above. The four square holes seen in the wall would have opened into pig pens; manure would be discarded through the holes. Many barns at this time had an area sectioned off for the granary, where grain was stored.

A concrete silo is standing to the right of the barn, it would have been a step up from the wooden silos commonly used at this time. The silo is dated "1902". The windmill on top of the barn roof would have either been used to provide power to a feed grinder inside the barn or acted as a pump to pump water from a well dug into the barn up into a supply tank. A man is standing in the barnyard holding a team of harnessed horses. A boy is posing with a bull, holding a wooden lead that appears to be attached to the bull's nose ring.

The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.

This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 1006. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County.
