- Description
- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. A man and a woman are standing outside a brick home in the country. The house seems to be covered in a brick veneer with arched brick headers above the windows. A curved Romanesque inspired window sits in the central dormer. Decorative, carved bargeboard is on the peak of the roof.
A wood and wire fence surrounds the yard of the home. A barn is visible in the background to the right of the image. The woman is wearing a flower patterned dress and the man is wearing a shirt, trousers and suspenders. A dog is lying to the right of the man in the grass, but is barely visible due to negative damage.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 1055. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County. - Notes
- Condition: Poor - Image is somewhat clear. Little to no damage to glass plate. Very minor signs of oxidation outer edges. Several areas of emulsion loss. Largest area distorts image severely (width: 3cm, length: 13cm). Emulsion is flaking off in lower half of negative. *Handle carefully.
