- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. The photo gives a view of a large brick house in the country. Five men and two women are posing in front of the house. A dog is looking over the shoulder of the man to the far right.
The house is large with two-storey, stained glass bay windows. The house features fancy woodwork detailing in the brackets under the roof and on the verandah. The attic window is surrounded by fish scale shingles. Planters containing flowers and other plants have been set on the verandah. Part of a barn building can be seen behind the house to the left; an additional frame building can be seen on the far right. A wooden picket fence is surrounding the property. What appears to be a pile of cut logs is sitting beside the fence along with a sawbuck nearby.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 1058. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County. - Notes
- Condition: Good - Image is very clear. No visible damage to glass plate. Oxidation along left and right edge of negative (both sides have 1cm oxidation at widest point). Four fingerprints in upper left quadrant. Minor emulsion loss in lower left quadrant and lower right quadrant.
