- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. The photo shows a scene in a barnyard. Two men are standing in the yard with their hats in their hands while a boy stands beside them in his bare feet. Another man is posing on a hay wagon, holding the reins of a team of horses. A foal is standing in front of the horses. A boy is standing with a group of geese to the left of the hay wagon. Several cows are eating in the yard. The yard is surrounded by a wooden fence.
A large barn stands in the centre of the photo. The large doors to the upper level are open. The upper floor would have likely been used for storing hay and also contain a threshing floor. A cantilever overhang can be seen here attached to the barn. This appears to have been used as a type of shed for sheltering equipment and animals. To the left of the barn, there is a small building, possibly a chicken coop. To the right there is a small wood frame building with a hay mound on the roof. The hay would have been forked off the roof and placed in the barnyard for livestock to eat, seen here.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 1066. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County. - Notes
- Condition: Excellent - Image is very clear. No visible damage to glass plate. Some oxidation along right and lower edges of negative (3cm at widest point on right edge). Tiny spots of emulsion loss in right half of negative.
