- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. The photo shows a family in front of their large brick house in the country. A man is sitting in a chair on the grass with a little girl and a little boy on either side of him, presumably his children. A woman, possibly married to the seated man, is standing with a baby carriage; a baby is sitting in the carriage. A man with a bicycle is standing to the right. The family looks well-dressed.
The brick house features several interesting decorative details. The porch posts and brackets are painted and carved ornately. Darker brick details were used to decorate the exterior of the home, such as the headers over the windows. Fancy bargeboard sits in the roof peaks. An elegant bay window projects from the front of the house, its roof covered in fish scale shingles. Ivy trellises are attached to the ceiling of the porch. A plaque at the top of the house above the bay window reads "1893", likely the year the house was built.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 1081. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County. - Notes
- Condition: Poor - Image is clear. Glass plate is broken in two pieces, cracked horizontally. Oxidation around outer edges - most severe along right and upper edges (3cm at widest point). Light scratches on negative surface, deepest scratch in upper left quadrant (1.5cm long). Small amount of emulsion loss in corners, larges spot of material loss in lower half (length: 3.5cm, width: <1cm).
