- Description
- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. The photo features a family standing outside a brick house in the country. The portrait includes a woman, presumably the mother, two girls and two boys. The older girl and youngest boy are both wearing clothing with a nautically inspired collar, a popular style element for the time period. Both boys are donning newsboy style caps. The boy to the far right is standing beside a rocking horse, part of the image is missing due to negative damage. The youngest girl is sitting in a very small chair in front of the open gate.
The property is surrounded by a wooden rail fence. The house has a covered porch with a concave roof. Fancy brackets decorate the verandah. The front door features long, narrow sidelight windows. A half-round window sits in the central dormer with ginger breading on the roof above and a finial on the peak. A lightning rod can be seen on the roof to the left.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 1103. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County. - Notes
