- This photograph was taken by local photographers Carter & Isaac in the early 20th century. The photo gives a view of three men on a farm. One man is standing to the left of the photo with his hat in his hand. To the right, a team of horses are hitched to an empty wagon. A man is standing on the wagon holding the horses' reins. A third man is posing in front of the wagon and leaning on a pitchfork. Many chickens are scattered throughout the barnyard.
There are two barn buildings in the background. To the left is a smaller gable barn that appears to be older than the larger barn to the right. Almost all of the windows have been boarded up. The barn to the right is a bank barn. It is a rectangular structure with two levels built into sloped ground or a "bank". The lower level would have been used to house horses and other livestock. The ramp leading to the large double-doors, seen here, allowed wagons to access the upper level where hay was stored. The upper level would have also included a threshing floor. Lightning rods have been mounted on the roofs of both buildings; the rods were used to prevent lightning from striking the actual roof itself which could lead to fire.
The Carter & Isaac company specialized in outdoor photography, focusing on houses and farmsteads in rural Ontario. William Webster Carter was the photographer and traveled by horse and buggy through the countryside with his camera and other equipment. His wife, Bertha Isaac, processed the glass negatives and made prints for sale. Carter & Isaac took photographs in the St. Marys area between 1902 and 1906 and briefly again in 1908.
This image is a contact print made from the original glass plate negative. The contact identifier number can be seen in the bottom corner of the photograph where Carter & Isaac have scratched it into the emulsion. The number is 1122. This photo is part of a collection of photos which appear to have been taken in the northern part of Oxford County. - Notes
- Condition: Very Good - Image is very clear. Glass plate is slightly worn along bottom edge. Signs of oxidation along outer edges, concentrated on upper and right edges (<1cm at widest point). Light scratch in lower right quadrant (length: 4.3cm). One fingerprint in upper left quadrant, five fingerprints in upper right quadrant. Minor emulsion deterioration along right edge (<1cm at widest point).
