- Description
- This house is located at 51 Church Street South. The house was built with yellow brick as were many other St. Marys homes in the late 19th century. The house sits on two lots atop a hill and has an elaborate entrance which can be seen from the street. Note the grand verandah and enclosed entryway. Bay windows can be seen to the right on the side of the structure. The windows have been fitted with wood shutters and a garage was built to match the house, seen to the left.
Milner Harrison, a local merchant, was the original owner of the property; he sold the land to his son David, a physician and flax manufacturer. David built the house on the land sometime between 1869 and 1874. Tenants would later reside in the home, including Robert Eaton, a local grocer. By the early 20th century, manufacturer James Clark lived in the house with his family. Additions have been made to the rear of the house; however, the original woodwork remains.
In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series. - Notes
