- Description
- This photo gives a view of the house at 100 Church Street South. James Eaton purchased the property in 1863 and the house was built approximately one year later. Eaton was a local dry goods merchant. Alexander Belch, the founder of the St. Marys Argus newspaper, bought the house from Eaton in 1867. He eventually sold the home to the Trustees of the St. Marys Methodist Church.
The house was then used as a residence for ministers, many of which came and went in a year or two. In 1904, Rev. Thomas Manning purchased the house at the end of his pastorate; he rented the home to various tenants. In 1912, the house came under the ownership of James Moore, who worked for farmers in Blanshard and for a time, owned and operated the General Parcel Delivery in St. Marys. He would later establish his own farm near Rannoch. Finally, in 1939 Thelma and Newton McMurray bought the house from the Town and resided there for many years.
The photo shows the limestone detailing of the house; the half-course cut stone on the front of the building and the rough cut rubble course stone on the side wall. The house has large stone quoins on all corners along with prominent stone slab lintels. A portion of the front porch is visible; this was built with masonry limestone and features a cross gable roof with wood shake shingles. Though it is not visible in the image, the porch also includes a stone voussoir style archway and columns. The porch was a later addition to the building.
In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series. - Notes
