- Description
- This house is located at 163 Church Street South. The house was built in 1900 by Richard S. Box. Box owned a private banking business in St. Marys for many years. He was also the son of Richard Box Sr., a wealthy grain merchant and notable St. Marys resident. When Box Sr. passed away, Richard S. Box inherited his father's wealth and spent most of his years involved in the St. Marys community.
The house was constructed with red brick and features limestone details. The dimensions of the house are quite immense. The house contains many elements of the Queen Anne style popular in the late 19th to early 20th century. Such elements include, a varying roofline, a round corner tower and a deep porch. Note the dormer window on the roof and the fishtail shingle details on the tower.
In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series.
