- Description
- This is a photo of 113 Queen Street East in downtown St. Marys, taken in the early 1980s. This building is associated with grocer Fred W. Hutton. Hutton ran a grocery store out of this building. In 1904, Hutton commissioned builders Robert Clyde and Robert Barbour to replace the original one-storey grocery store with this larger building. Hutton operated the store for around 45 years. The lower level was a general store; fine china was sold on the upper level. A clothing store was located in the building at the time this photo was taken.
The building was constructed in the Queen Anne Revival style. Two large display windows are on the lower level with a recessed entrance between them. The upper level has three large windows surrounded by sandstone headers and decorative columns. The building features ornate cornice mouldings painted white in the image. The frieze at the top of the building is decorated in an elegant garland pattern. This building has been historically designated.
In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses and buidlings of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series. - Notes
