- Description
- This photo provides a view of the house located at 253 Elgin Street East as it would have appeared in the early 1980s. This grand two-storey yellow brick home is still standing today. The house contains Romanesque-Revival features such as the arched windows and the rounded, ornamental brickwork acting as an archway over the front door. Note the decorative brackets under the roof and the functional shutters that are fitted to the shape of the windows. Orange brick has been used to add decorative detail to the house.
The house was originally owned and built for local merchant Alfred H. Lofft and his wife Kate in 1886. The house is commonly referred to as the “Lofft Home” as it remained in the family until 1977. Several significant changes have been made to the house in the years after it was built including the construction of a large addition at the rear.
In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series. - Notes
