- Description
- This house at 524 Elgin Street West was built for Robert White, a farmer and freeholder, c. 1878. The house and property was eventually sold to Robert White's son, Robert White Jr. who also farmed on the property. By 1885 the house was no longer owned by the White family as the property was sold to Joseph Meighen, the father of former Canadian Prime Minister Arthur Meighen.
Associated with Ron and Shirley Ferguson and family. The front of the home features a small verandah and overhang over the front door, both of which were painted at the time the photo was taken, likely to emphasize the decorative ginger breading and brackets.
In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series.
