Description
This image is one in a series of postcards from the Reg Near collection. It is a photograph of a canoe race held annually by the Easter Seal Society for fundraising. The race led teams from the St. Marys Dam down the Thames River to Fanshawe Lake. It was an extremely popular event in St. Marys, as seen by the number of racers and the large crowd gathered on the Victoria Bridge. It was held in the spring to ensure water levels were high enough, however on some years, canoe teams found Fanshawe still frozen on arrival.

This photograph is dated April 18, 1971.
