- Description
- This image is one in a series of postcards from the Reg Near collection. This depicts the entrance to the St. Marys Athletic Park, also known as "The Flats." Originally used in the 1850s for pastureland and annual militia training, it played host to numerous sporting events such as cricket, lacrosse, baseball, and lawn bowling. These would have been watched from the grandstand in the backgroud, which has since been demolished. Formerly, a boathouse existed on the south side, on the banks of Rice Lake.
In 2005, the name was officially changed to Milt Dunnell Field, in celebration of the local sports editor and columnist's 100th birthday. The Flats is still a focal point for community recreation. - Notes
