- Description
- This image is one in a series of postcards from the Reg Near collection. It is a photograph of the VIA Rail station and Old Water Tower in St. Marys. The station was built in 1907 to accommodate the Toronto-Sarnia railway line after fifty years of effort and negotiations. It was almost demolished in 1987, but was purchased by the town and refurbished as a VIA Rail station, as it still serves today.
Built in 1899, the Water Tower served the Town for 90 years as the main tower until 1989, when a new tower was commissioned. The exceptionally preserved old tower remains an important symbol of the community, and was designated as a historical site in 1978.
The back of this photograph features a calendar for the year 2000. - Notes
