Description
This image is one in a series of postcards from the Reg Near collection. It shows the front gates and lane way of the St. Marys Cemetery. The first burial in the protestant part of the St. Marys Cemetery was in December, 1885. This “new” cemetery was a replacement for three much smaller, adjoining burial grounds on Elgin Street belonging to the Anglican, Methodist and Presbyterian churches. The “old” cemetery had been in use since the 1840s and had become over-crowded to the point that it was a concern to the local Board of Health. Today, the original cemetery land serves as a park for the East Ward, and a plaque commemorates its early history and marks it as the burial place for many of the town’s earliest settlers.

This postcard is used and dated June 8, 1911.
