- Description
- This house, located at 347 Queen Street East, was built for Elizabeth James in the late 1850s. Elizabeth purchased the land from James Ingersoll in 1854 and the house was built sometime between this date and 1861 when she sold the property. Elizabeth appears to have lived in the house with her husband William James who worked as a cooper. The building's close proximity to the street is a sign of its early construction; it is one of St. Marys's earliest stone buildings.
The house was constructed with local limestone. The stonemason attributed to the house is Henry Andrews, who assisted with the building of the stone abutments on the London Railway Viaduct. The front door is deeply recessed with sidelights and a transom window. All of the wooden shutters seen in this photo have since been removed. This house is a designated heritage property.
In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series.
