Description
This house was built c. 1889-1890 for John Bartlett. Bartlett was a local baker and grocer. He used the house for rental income and never lived in the house himself. The house would later become known as the home of the Harstone family. Leonard Harstone was a lawyer and town clerk. Leonard and Beatrice Harstone lived in the house with their infant son Robert until 1915.

This property features a front gable with an arched gothic-inspired window. Brick lintels complement the arches of the lower and upper storey windows. Projecting brick quoins line the sides of the house. The black shutters seen here are still on the house today. The front door is framed by sidelights and a transom window. The door surround consists of a prominent crosshead and pilasters. The original verandah was removed from the house at some point before this photo was taken, but it has since been restored without the decorative bargeboard.

In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series.
