- Description
- This house was built in 1882 for Donald McLarty, a blacksmith and carriage maker. He furnished most of the steel for the London and Sarnia railway bridges. McLarty built this home across the street from his blacksmith and carriage shop. The house was built in the Italianate style popular in Canadian house designs from the mid to late 19th century. The house was designed with ornate exterior features such as the ornamental brackets under the roof eaves, the projecting brick quoins along the sides of the home and the enclosed porch with round-arched windows and wrought-iron rail above. Other notable elements of the house include the two-storey bay windows and the verandah with its decorative pediment. The enclosed porch was added to the house c. 1900 along with the verandah added shortly after. In recent years part of the verandah was removed to accommodate a new addition to the house.
In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series. - Notes
