- This yellow-brick two-storey was built in 1889 for R.T. Gilpin. William Williams was the architect responsible for its design. The house later became known as the childhood home of Canadian poet David Donnell, born in St. Marys in 1939. Donnell's father, Arnold Donnell, taught classics at St. Marys Collegiate. The house still retains many of its original features to this day.
The house was built with both Italianate features, such as the arched windows and decorative brackets under the roof eaves, and Gothic features including carved bargeboard and an ornate portico with a wrought-iron balcony railing above.
In the winter and early spring of 1982-1983, Randall Speller, a colleague of Larry Pfaff from the Art Gallery of Ontario, took a series of black and white photographs of houses of architectural significance in St. Marys. Larry Pfaff and several local friends who shared this interest in architecture took some additional photographs in a subsequent summer. This photograph is one of this series.
