- Description
- This image is one in a series of postcards from the Reg Near collection. This postcard is a Christmas greeting for a soldier fighting in World War One. World War One was fought from July 1914 to November 1918 and Canadian soldiers were unable to return home for the holidays. The postcard depicts a woman who looks sullen as she writes a letter. The inscription notes that Christmas is a happy day, but the woman's sullen expression shows that during the war, Christmas could also be sad. The postcard was sent on November 27, 1917 so that it would be able to reach England by Christmas.

- "Xmas Thoughts to My Soldier Boy
I am here in dear old Canada-/It's just the same old place/As when you left, expecting that/We miss an absent face-/And you are in a far-off land,/So I send this to say/My loving thoughts will be with you/On happy Christmas Day."
