- This is a photograph showing the southeast corner of Queen and Wellington Streets. Behind one of the many people out on the sidewalks, you can just make out the Weir Fountain, which was constructed in 1903, but the roads are unpaved, dating the photo pre-1921. In the background you can see the town hall.
The building on the corner was built by T.B. Guest, the first Reeve and Mayor of St. Marys. It is divided into three sections. The one on the corner, which is visible in this photo, originally housed William Gordon, a dry goods dealer. Since 1892, it has been occupied by the bank of Montreal. However, it was not the first permanent location of the Bank of Montreal in St. Marys.
The Bank of Montreal was originally located at 84 Water Street South, a building that was constructed during the 1850s, a period where Queen Street and Water Street were competing to become the major commercial centre of the town. Queen Street won, leaving the businesses on Water Street behind. - Notes
