- Description
- This photo shows Clifton Brown, a St. Marys mayor, on his high-wheeler or Penny Farthing bicycle in a parade. He is putting on a demonstration/performance at a Homecoming parade in St. Marys in 1978. This image is taken on Water St., just south of Queen St. On the float, a sign reading "CLIFTON" can be seen. There are people lined up on the sidewalk behind the float. Behind this crowd, some signs can be read in the storefronts, including Cascade Cleaners & ___RER__, Thames Valley / Bus 284 23, and Radio & TV / All Makes.
The Penny Farthing was purchased by his father, John Brown, who rode it until he was well into his 70's. Clifton Brown also became well known for riding the Penny Farthing. It is now part of the collection at the St. Marys Museum.
