StPeters_Panel 1820 Original white clapboard church 56' x 42' opened with a service on Christmas Day. ST.PETER'S CHURCH OF ENGLAND There is an English church at the east end of the village. This edifice is a fine building, surmounted with a handsome belfry, which is soon to be furnished with an excellent bell... The people have spared no cost to furnish the church in a superior style; however, a great many of them prefer their amusement on Sabbath... so that it is no unusual thing to see a half dozen of pews in a row without a solitary individual... Fowler in 1830 quoted by F.S.Dowe, St. Peter's Church, Cobourg, 1968 1829 Nineteen feet added to the northern end 1833 Side galleries added 1844 New brick tower with spire added, the start for an entirely new brick building 1854 Present church building was built around the old, which was then removed in pieces through the new window spaces! Architect Kivas Tully (Victoria Hall) and Henry Bowler Lane were both involved in the design. Crop from W.H.Bartlett's print of the East Pier 1977 - Major renovations required (ANGLICAN CHURCH) Somewhat unusual: • Like the old one, the new building faced north rather than the traditional east (towards Jerusalem and the rising sun) • It was without transepts (which would have made it the traditional cruciform). Many additions have since been made to allow the church to better serve its community and present a successful blend of Gothic and Romanesque Revival architectural styles. 2005 - St. Paul's Chapel
