This style was popular during the Presidency of Ulysses S. Grant and is thus sometimes called the Grant style. The mansard roof is definitive of the style. 428 John St. 1874 1870-1879 JAMES BEATTY HOUSE Once described as a mixture of Medieval and Gothic, this Italianate Villa is considered by Rob Mikel to be "one of the best examples of unrestrained Victorian architecture in the area." An original wood tower can be seen in the Belden Historical Atlas of 1878. Note the variety of window forms. This house was owned by farmer James Beatty who also had rare brick barns built. 540 King St. East. 1876 ROBERT MULHOLLAND HOUSE This architecturally exuberant home was built for Robert Mulholland, a wealthy land and grain merchant.
