- Tensiometer
(A) - wooden rectangular box; curved dove tail edges; metal handle at top secured by 2 slotted screws; hinged front door has small black metal handle; secured closed by 2 question mark shaped hooks over screws; embossed red label on door reads: "SURFACE TENSION" in white; metal manufacturers tag attached to top by 2 metal screws, reads in part: "CENTRAL SCIENTIFIC CO./…"; 3 black plastic feet on bottom; inside has piece of wood screwed to 2 sides near bottom for (B) to slide under
(B) - Surface tesnion apparatus - wooden square base; attached in centre with 3 screws from bottom is a black metal tri-pod with centre pole; on 2 legs are large screws with flat heads; other leg has metal ring with horizontal screw, continues to silver rod, at top of rod is a black horizontal bar with horizontal screw on one end; at other end bar forms a T; on top of the T is a silver metal disk; on bottom of T is a large screw with flat head
- centre bar forms T; at top a fine steel wire is stretched between supports; one end of wire is tightly clamped, other end wire is attached to wheel and controlled by horizontal thumb screw, at this end is a metal disk ,along top edge of disk are the numbers from 0 to 110; engraved writing reads in part: "CENCO-DuNOUY TENSIOMETER/../CENTRAL SCIENTIFIC CO./…"; a center knob holds a silver arm with rectangular head that has numbers 0 to 10 engraved on it; at the middle of the centre T is a horizontal bar with curved end attached to end with silver screw; on either side of curved piece are 2 silver metal pieces with circular ends attached at top with silver bar; coming from centre of wire from a small silver box and extending through silver pieces is a black rod;
- slides into box (A)
- white Kent County Board of Education label on centre post; white with black print (L-22cm, W-23.7cm, H-24.9cm)
( C) - bulletin; white paper; black and red print; dated September 15, 1924; from Central Scientific Company, Chicago U.S.A.; contains information about apparatus, description of apparatus,a nd directions on its use (L-18.9cm, W-26.8cm)
(D) - wood cylinder; 3 pieces held together; cream coloured label lacquered to bottom round surface, reads in part: "Serial No. 205. RING for No 10402/Tensiome[te]r/…" in black; top portion of cylinder has 2 smaller cylinders: attached to smallest cylinder on top is a silver wire; end of wire travells down crack where 2 halves meet
(E)- wood cylinder; open end fits over top of (D)
- used in science labs at CCI in early 1900s
- first school built at corner of Murray and Prince streets in 1855, known as Chatham Grammar School
- 1870s school was turned into a high school
- 1887 school obtained collegiate status
- September 1940 the building on site today was opened
- spring of 2002 school was slated to be closed a campaign to keep it open lasted one year and school finally closed in spring of 2003
