Description
- wooden, square base; black painted metal plate, rectangular with rounded ends, attached in centre; 2 large metal spools affixed to metal plate, wound with beige thread wrapped wire; one large and one small tube protrude from base of each spool, large tubes have 2 screws and 2 holes and 1 holes running through
- black painted curved metal pieces attached to the top of the spools curve towards each other and partially surround a wire wrapped red painted wheel; a manufacturer's plate attached to the top of the curved pieces is embossed: "MANFD. BY/MAP & SCHOOL/SUPPLY CO. /LIMITED/TORONTO ONT."
- the red wheel can be turned with a metal wheel with a grooved edge that is connected to the red wheel through a metal bar that is connected to each of the curved pieces; the opposite side of the wheel has a protruding slotted metal cylinder that hits several thin metal plate attached to metal rods that are attached to the curved pieces
- white paper label with black border reads: "Field=2 2/3 ohms/Arm 1/3 [inch]" in blue
- used in science labs at CCI in early 1900s
- first school built at corner of Murray and Prince streets in 1855, known as Chatham Grammar School
- 1870s school was turned into a high school
- 1887 school obtained collegiate status
- September 1940 the building on site today was opened
- spring of 2002 school was slated to be closed a campaign to keep it open lasted one year and school finally closed in spring of 2003
