Description
A) - brown wooden box; hinged lid; 2 metal question mark shaped hooks on bottom front edge of box hook onto 2 metal nails on front side of lid to secure closed; black metal manufacturers plate on top of lid has shield with a beaver on top with words "CAN LAB" under shield; to right of this is gold lettering which reads: "CANAD[I]AN LABORATORY SUPPLIES/LIMITED/TORON[TO]"; gold border around plate; secured to lid with 2 nails; inside of box are wooden partitions; each stands vetically, 3 have notches cut out of top edge
- attached to inside lid is rectangle with curved edge
(B) - brass; round base; brass bell shaped piece sits on base and continues into a hollow cylinder; thicker ring near top edge has hole on side for screw; screw holds (C) in place; base has 2 painted feet on bottom; a large screw that sits near base pokes through hole in base and point can be seen on bottom; bottom has round depression in centre (D-6.1cm, H-17cm)
(C) - solid brass cylinder; top secured with brass nail is curved flat meatl rectangle; in bend is a slotted brass nail; on opposite end are two vertical bars with V-shaped notch to support (D) (L-13.1cm, W-10.8cm, T-.1cm)
(D) - brass; balance; sits in v-shaped notches of (C); one end is cylindrical and has a sharp point coming out middle, corresponds to brass nain in bend of (C); middle section has metal bars coming out either side that sit in v-shaped notch of(C); along brass bar running toward curved end with a metal hook are engraved lines and corresponding numbers from 1-9, there is a notch above each line, engraving near middle reads: "CANLAB/GERMANY" (L-20cm, W-1.2cm, T-1.5cm)
(E) - clear glass cylinder; has clear glass hook on top; hangs off hook on (D) (D-.9cm, L-9cm)
(F) - hollow glass cylinder; glass "I" hook on top; hangs off hok on (D); bottom part is solid glass, continues to hollow bulb containing mercury; continuing from bulb is hollow cylinger; in this cylinder is small cylinder which is suppose to contain mercury from bulb; whtie paper on inside had black and red print; reads in part: "Celsius/…/5gr. Verdrangend. [umlaut above a] (L-8.4cm, D-.8cm)
(G) - circular box; bottom is covered with white paper; sides are covered with red paper; inside is cream coloured; holds (I,J,K,L,M) (D-2.8cm, H-1.1cm)
(H) - circular lid for box (G); top is covered with white paper, has 2 black rings not quite in centre; sides are covered with red paper; inside is cream coloured (D-2.8cm, H-1.7cm)
(I) - fine metal wire; shaped like U with ends curving outward; possibly weights; stored in box (g) (L-1.6cm, W-1.1cm)
(J) - same as (I) (L-2.2cm, W-1.8cm)
(K) - same as (I) (L-2.1cm, W-1.5cm)
(L) same as I (L-1.5cm, W-1.8cm)
(M) - lightweight silver metal wire; ends curved outward; middle bent; possibly weights; stored in box (G) (L-.7cm, W-1.5cm)
(N) - rectangular box; card; bottom covered with white paper; sides are covered with purple paper; inside cream; holds (P,Q,R,S,T,) (L-6.2cm, W-4cm, H-2cm)
(O) - silde cover for (N); rectangle tube open at both ends; covered on outside by purple paper; inside is cream (L-6.4cm, W-4cm, H-2cm)
(P) - silver; metal; u-shaped with ends curving outwards; middle is flattened and has rectangular notch; stored in box (N) (L-4.7cm, W-3.2cm, T-.2cm)
(Q) - silver; metal; u-shaped with end curving up; middle is flattened and has rectangular notch; stored in box (N) (L-4.5cm, W-2.5cm, T-.2cm)
(R) - silver; metal; u-shaped with a flat bottom; ends curve out; stored in box (N) (L-2.9cm, W-2.1cm, T-.1cm)
(S) - same as (R) (L-2.9cm, W-2.5cm, T-.1cm)
(T) - brass cylinder; hook comes out one end; flattened piece of metal with threaded end comes out opposite end; small hole with small amount of wire on end of flattened piece; stored in box (N) (L-2.7cm, D-.5cm)
(U) - clear glass; cylinder with opene end with pouring spout; bottom has flared lip (D-5.6cm, H-4.5cm)
- used in science labs at CCI in early 1900s
- first school built at corner of Murray and Prince streets in 1855, known as Chatham Grammar School
- 1870s school was turned into a high school
- 1887 school obtained collegiate status
- September 1940 the building on site today was opened
- spring of 2002 school was slated to be closed a campaign to keep it open lasted one year and school finally closed in spring of 2003
