Description
- (A) - rectangular wooden base; 3 wooden spools attached in top corners with a screw in the top, spools are wound with wire and each has 2 heavy wires leading out from bottom that attach to 8 metal plates placed in an inverted "V" formation; there is a small gap between the plate and the ends are notched to form a circle where 2 meet, the plates are held in place with 14 screws and at the point there is a screw with a wide grooved nut; at the ends of the "V" a metal plate rests on top of the lower plate, each attached with 2 screws; on the left side, at the opposite end of the upper plate a metal arm ending in a black knob is attached below the plate, there is a metal nub below the knob that comes into contact with a metal plate attached to the lower right corner of the wooden base when the arm is depressed; an identical arm is attached vertically in the centre of the wooden base and its nub makes contact with the point of a v-shaped metal plate attached below it
- a manufacturers plate in the lower right quadrant reads in part: "CENTRAL SCIENTIFIC CO./LABORATORY/APPARATUS/…/SUPPLIES/CHEMICALS/…"
- letters and numbers engraved below the inverted "V"
(B) - (E) - tapered metal cylinders with black plastic grooved knobs on the end (D-1.2cm, H-3.8cm)
- used in science labs at CCI in early 1900s
- first school built at corner of Murray and Prince streets in 1855, known as Chatham Grammar School
- 1870s school was turned into a high school
- 1887 school obtained collegiate status
- September 1940 the building on site today was opened
- spring of 2002 school was slated to be closed a campaign to keep it open lasted one year and school finally closed in spring of 2003
