Description
- silver plated metal trophy in ornate design: two tiered with the bottom being fluted and having an elaborate scalloped and flared base in a floral pattern, top portion is larger and bowl shaped having a shallow wave rim with a continuous floral pattern in relief around the entire rim
- equally spaced fitting top and bottom indicate that this trophy originally had three handles
- manufacturers mark on bottom indicating that it was made by "SIMPSON/HALL MILLER/& Co/USA"
- trophy awarded to John Chittem of Raleigh, winner of the first marathon race held in Chatham, course was from Hotel Sanita to MCR tracks at Charing Cross and back
- note: there is a copy of the newspaper clipping regarding the race in the artifact file
