Description
This stereoscopic view, taken between 1876 and 1880, shows part of the excavation for the new lock of the Third Welland Canal in the foreground, with the west side of the harbour in the background. The photo was taken from the edge of East St. looking southwest. On the left is a smokestack for a stationary steam engine, likely used for pumping water out of the excavation. The photo shows the pedestrian/ vehicular swing bridge over the Second Welland Canal lock, and the temporary trestle over the excavation, a number of vessels, and West St. in the background.
Notes
The condition of the stereoscopic view is poor, as is the original image quality.
