This house is located on 31 King Street South in St. Marys and was known as the "Maxwell's house" as it was owned by Harold Maxwell and his family.
The home was designated in 1987 as being of architectural value or interest. The reasons are listed below:
The 1861 census for the village of St. Marys lists David Smith, gentleman, with capital amounting to $100,000. The salmon-pink brick house which he built in ca. 1857 is one of the first residences constructed in brick in St. Marys; an early photograph of the village from 1863 shows the house with a one-storey verandah which covered the entire three bays of the principal facade on King Street. The house possesses classical revival features, most noticeably the eaves returns. In the 1920's the front door was altered to the present entranceway which is a type of revival of eighteenth century American design. Like other residences of St. Marys, this residence is set right on the street, and, to this day, it is imposing and handsome.
