- The gentlemen that wore these hats were conductors for the railroad. In this position, they were the most visible of the railway men. They were responsible for assisting the public traveling on the trains. Their principal task would have been to punch the tickets. The conductor's punch was similar to the station agent's seal. It produced a personalized indent of the conductor's initials, making it easy for him to verify that the punch was valid. Conductors were expected to keep their uniforms in pristine condition. Shoes were to be so shiny, that conductors could shave themselves using the reflections in their shoes.
