Chambers was the contractor who made the bayonet for the Board of Ordnance. Before paying for the bayonet it was inspected by a Board of Ordnance inspector - each inspector had their own number - that is what the crown over the number is from. They were largely checking the quality of the forge welds used to put the bayonet together, three in total.
